Okay Katy, we all love
the new reality shows. Who doesn’t watch “Extreme Makeover?"
Building homes for families to make their lives better. It gives
you a great heart warming feeling to see hundreds of people give so
much to people who need so much and have so little.
What about “The
Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette?" You all know how popular that
is. Okay guys, you know you watch them too, just to keep harmony at
home. That’s our excuse. We men don’t really get into that old
soap opera mushy stuff. We are way too cool for that. Nonetheless,
reality shows are a huge hit.
Here is reality for
you! Right here in Katy Texas! A true life reality that needs
us to step up and be counted. No one wants to get left out of
this. This is our chance “Katy” to show our support and “Help
Our
Neighbor”.
We are famous for
football here! State champions every year, or so close you can
smell victory. Any one who has ever attended a Katy football game
at home or away, see Katians and cannot believe our side of the
stands is always solid red. Anyone who has not gotten a ticket
early enough can tell you. When you are sitting on the opposing
teams side with plenty of empty seats, the other teams' fans are in
total awe with admiration, envy and jealousy. It’s hard to believe
we “Katy Fans” turn out so completely for our kids. I mean, its
“Friday Night Lights” for real in Katy. On game night, Katy
businesses may as well close for an away game, because Katy is
virtually a ghost town. Everyone has gone to the game! Roll up the
sidewalks and the “Last one gone, turn out the lights."
Well here’s our chance
to show the whole state of
Texas that our love, loyalty and devotion to
our community is not limited to just our kids and sports teams.
I am not talking about
only Katy. To me, when I think of Katy, I think of all Katy I.S.D.
Sure there are some sports rivalry between schools, but Cinco Ranch,
Seven Lakes, Taylor, Mayde Creek, Morton Ranch, Woodcreek, and
Firethorne, to name a few, possess the Katy area spirit. All of
which are great communities that show great spirit as well as
dedication. We are one huge exceptional community that really cares
about everything, especially people in need.
Well, we have a family in
need of such love and caring right here in Katy. Someone that has
touched and impacted the lives of so many families in our community. A lot
of people don’t even know their names or even know these two
people have directly or indirectly helped to make the Katy area
communities a better place to live.
“Don Acord?" Do you
know this name? Has he done anything for you? Well, chances are he
has and you just don’t know it. His wife Cheryl, what has she done
for you or this community that you are aware of? Well who are they
and what makes them so special? The answer is “nothing." These are
just two of the many hard working, devoted people who seek no
recognition or reward and usually would not consider themselves
special. This is the reason why all of our communities will all
come together. They will all stand up, join together and rally
around this family to show them our community spirit. The same
kind of spirit that we show our sports teams and the devotion we
have for the people of our community.
Don’t think for one
moment, if you don’t help with this, that it will go unnoticed. Even
the smallest of help will go a long way to help in this Katy area
family in need. No matter how small of a part, you as individuals play
in this effort, the amount of self satisfaction you will get from
helping the Acords will be emotionally overwhelming when you see the end
result.
This fundraiser has
the ability to shape up to be the biggest, most successful event the
Katy area has ever seen. There will be no “black eyes” on this
entire community for not being involved or not supporting this
cause, because we will all unite. We will not fail because every person
with a heart in this area will be involved. I know the people in
our area and deal with the school districts. I have great customers
from all the surrounding areas and I am asking them all to “Please
Help."
Life kicks us all when we
are down and we all have tragedies that no one else even knows
about. We hear about other people having “life shattering” events
in their lives and we feel sad for a moment then have to go on
dealing with our own every day problems. Life is so fast it is hard
to take time out for any one else, but we wish that we could. Let’s
start here! Just do it. Show our Katy area spirit! “Help our
neighbor!” Let’s start a trend like our winning tradition.
Don Acord, fifty years old,
works for Mrs. Baird’s Bakery. Don has worked with Katy Youth AAU
basketball and Katy Youth football for years. He has helped with
countless fundraisers and projects for every school in this entire
district. He has helped secure bread, hamburger and hotdog buns and
countless other items for all of our school community events
throughout the years. He befriends every one that he meets and is
always ready to drop the name of a friend wherever it may help. Don
supplements his income by dressing and playing the local Santa Claus
every year. Going to parties and helping children, as well as
adults, keep the spirit of Christmas alive. On numerous occasions
taking time out his own busy schedule “Santa” has gone to homes of
severely physically challenged children out of the goodness of his
heart, simply because he was asked to and does it at no charge. To
see the light and excitement in those kids’ eyes breaks my heart,
and being such a special person, Don thrives on it.

In 1982, Don married
his lovely wife Cheryl, now forty six years of age. She has worked
in the Katy school system for fifteen years. Ten of of those
years were at Cinco Ranch ISD Attendance Office. She has countless
friends and knows every kid there. She is a big part of this
community and is loved by all who know her. In 1980, Cheryl had
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, in 1998 thyroid cancer, in 2006 a tumor was
removed from her para-thyroid and in 2007, skin cancer. She beat
them all! Unfortunately, she now faces bigger problems. She just
had a tumor removed from her neck. They have found six tumors on
her brain, cancer in her left lung, chest cancer as well as cancer
in each hip. She will soon begin a regiment of treatments, and even
with insurance, the cost will be unbelievable.

Their children
Kimberly 26, Donnie 22 and Sarah 20, all graduated from
Katy High School
and reside in Katy. The whole family is devastated, but Cheryl is a
trooper as usual. She has said that “If it is my time to go I’m
ready." She will fight, so will her family and the wonderful people
of this God fearing community.
We will start this
effort by sending emails. We need ideas from all of the loving,
devoted people, family and friends in this community, surrounding
communities and state.

Free TV spots, free
radio spots, great ideas, plans and most of all, we need Katy area
community spirit to make this happen. The feeling of
satisfaction, pride, community respect and admiration we will all
get from the surrounding communities will be immeasurable. I
cannot do this alone, but with your help and support this will be an awesome
accomplishment. Don’t let the Acords, yourself or our community
down. Let’s show everyone the Katy area fighting spirit!
Email your ideas to
goodoleboyscatering@hotmail.com. Tell us what you can do to
help.
We need time to plan and make this all happen. We
will start by exchanging info through email and then face to face
meetings, so we can all work on ideas and details.
Procure items for live and silent auctions, food donations
for plate sales and anything that you can do to help. All ideas will
be considered.
Please let us know if
you would like to form a committee to head up part of it. This
could be huge and I don’t mind if someone wants to take the lead. I
will be glad to follow.
